Smart Note-Taking: The Cornell Method Explained

If you are just copying down everything the professor writes on the board word-for-word, you aren’t really learning—you are just acting as a human photocopy machine. Passive note-taking makes it incredibly difficult to review for exams later.

If you want to actually understand and remember your notes, you need to switch to the Cornell Note-Taking Method. It’s a game-changer used by top university students worldwide. Here is how you set it up:

  • 1. The Page Layout (The Secret Sauce)

Take a standard lined notebook page and divide it into three sections:

  • The Notes Column: Draw a vertical line down the right side of the page, leaving a wide margin (about 70% of the page).
  • The Cue Column: The remaining 30% on the left side is your cue column.
  • The Summary Space: Draw a horizontal line across the bottom of the page, leaving a 2-inch space at the bottom.
  • 2. During Class: Use the Notes Column

While the professor is speaking, write your main notes in the large right column. Don’t write full sentences. Use bullet points, abbreviations, and symbols. Focus only on the main ideas, formulas, and key concepts.

  • 3. After Class: Fill the Cue Column

As soon as the class is over (or later that evening), look at your notes. In the left “Cue” column, write down questions that your notes answer. Write down keywords or main headers. This column acts as a built-in flashcard system.

  • 4. The Review: Write the Summary

In the bottom section, write a 2-3 sentence summary of the entire page in your own words. If you can’t summarize it, you haven’t understood the lecture.

How to Study with It: When exams come, just cover the right side of the page with your hand. Look at the questions and keywords in the left column and try to explain the answers out loud. It forces active recall, cementing the knowledge in your brain forever!
