We all sit down at our desks with the goal to “study for three hours.” But within 20 minutes, you are checking your phone, getting a snack, or staring out the window. The human brain is simply not designed to focus intensely for hours on end without fatigue.
1. Pick One Single Task
Don’t say, “I am going to study Science.” Say, “I am going to read Chapter 4 and take notes.” Give your brain a clear, specific target.
2. Set a Timer for 25 Minutes (One Pomodoro)
Set a timer for exactly 25 minutes. During this time, you must work with 100% laser focus. No checking WhatsApp, no getting water, no pausing. It is only 25 minutes; your brain knows it can handle this short sprint.
3. Take a 5-Minute Break
When the timer rings, stop immediately. Take a 5-minute break. Stand up, stretch, look at a distant wall, or grab a drink.
4. Repeat the Cycle
You have now completed one “Pomodoro.” Start the timer for another 25 minutes.
5. The Long Break
After completing four Pomodoros (about 2 hours total), take a longer break of 20 to 30 minutes. You can check your phone, eat a snack, or go for a short walk.
