Moving out of your house and into a college hostel or dorm is incredibly exciting, but it can also get expensive very quickly. When packing, the biggest mistake first-year students make is bringing everything they own. You don’t need your entire wardrobe, and you definitely don’t need to buy a bunch of expensive new gear.
Here is a practical, budget-friendly packing list of the actual essentials:
- 1. The Extension Board (Your Best Friend)**
Hostel rooms never have enough plug points, and the ones they do have are usually in the most awkward corners. Buy a good quality, multi-socket extension board with a long wire. It will save you from fighting with your roommates over charging your phone and laptop.
- 2. A Basic First-Aid Kit**
Do not skip this! When you are sick at 2 AM with a fever, you won’t want to run around looking for a pharmacy. Pack a small pouch with a digital thermometer, band-aids, pain relievers, cold/cough medicine, and something for an upset stomach.
- 3. The Electric Kettle**
This is the ultimate hostel survival tool. Even if cooking isn’t allowed in your room, an electric kettle lets you make instant coffee for late-night study sessions, Maggi for midnight cravings, or hot water when you have a cold.
- 4. The 80/20 Clothing Rule**
Don’t buy a whole new wardrobe. Bring 80% comfortable, daily-wear clothes (jeans, t-shirts, comfortable tracks). Bring only 20% formal or heavy winter clothes. Closet space in dorms is tiny. Keep it simple and light.
- 5. Reusable Water Bottle & Tupperware**
Save money on buying plastic water bottles every day. Get a sturdy steel or copper bottle. A couple of air-tight Tupperware boxes are also lifesavers for storing snacks or keeping leftover food fresh.
