How to Teach Your Child About “Good Touch” and “Bad Touch”

As parents, we teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street, but we often hesitate to talk about bodily autonomy because it feels uncomfortable.

As parents, we teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street, but we often hesitate to talk about bodily autonomy because it feels uncomfortable. However, teaching your child about “Good Touch and Bad Touch” is the absolute most important safety lesson they will ever learn.

1. Teach Correct Anatomical Names

Do not use cute nicknames for private parts. Teach them the actual biological terms. Predators rely on secrecy and confusion.

2. The "Swimsuit Rule"

Tell them, “The parts of your body covered by your swimsuit are completely private. Nobody is allowed to touch those parts, and nobody should ask you to touch theirs.”

3. Their Body belongs to THEM

If a relative comes over and wants a hug, and your child says no, do not force them. Teach them they can offer a high-five or a wave instead.

4. The "No Secrets" Policy

Teach your child: “In our family, we do not keep secrets from Mom and Dad. If anyone ever tells you to keep a secret, you must come and tell us immediately.”
