How to Make Homework Time Less Stressful for Everyone

For many families, the hour after school is the most stressful part of the day. The child is tired, the parent is busy, and bringing out the homework diary often leads to arguments, tears, and frustration. It doesn’t have to be this way.

By setting up a solid routine, you can turn homework from a daily battle into a calm, productive habit.

  • 1. Allow Decompression Time**

Don’t force your child to open their books the minute they walk through the door. They have just spent hours following rules and concentrating. Let them wash up, have a healthy snack, and play freely for at least 45 minutes to recharge their brain.

  • 2. The “Co-Working” Strategy**

Kids hate feeling like they are being punished by having to sit and work while everyone else is watching TV or relaxing. Instead, create a co-working environment. Sit at the table with them and do your own work—whether it’s checking your emails, doing some Excel data entry, or planning your office schedule. When they see you focused on your work, they are much more likely to focus on theirs.

  • 3. Use the “First This, Then That” Rule**

Avoid using threats. Instead of saying, “If you don’t finish your math, you can’t go to the park,” rephrase it positively: “As soon as we finish this math page, we can grab your cycle and go to the park!” It shifts the focus toward the reward rather than the task.

  • 4. Break It Into Bites**

If your child has three subjects to complete, seeing all those books stacked up can cause instant anxiety. Hide the other books. Put only the math notebook on the table. Once that is done, take it away and bring out the English book. Breaking the work into small, visual pieces makes it feel manageable.
