How to Keep Cut Fruits Fresh in the Fridge for Days

We have all done this: you cut a massive watermelon, a few apples, or a papaya, eat half of it, and shove the rest into the fridge. By the next morning, the apples are brown, the watermelon is mushy, and everything tastes slightly like leftover garlic.

Cut fruits are incredibly fragile. But with a few simple storage hacks, you can keep them fresh, crisp, and delicious for up to 3 to 4 days.

  • 1. The “Honey Water” Trick for Apples & Pears

Apples and pears turn brown almost immediately due to oxidation. To stop this, mix one tablespoon of honey into a cup of room-temperature water. Soak the cut apple slices in this honey water for 5 minutes, then drain them. The peptide in honey completely halts the oxidation process. They will stay perfectly white in the fridge for days!

  • 2. Glass Containers, Not Plastic Wrap

Never leave half a watermelon or papaya sitting open on a fridge shelf, and stop using cling film (plastic wrap). Plastic wrap traps moisture unevenly, making the fruit slimy. Cut the fruit into cubes and store them in an airtight glass container. Glass doesn’t absorb odors, keeping the fruit tasting fresh, not like the onions sitting next to it.

  • 3. The Paper Towel Base for Berries

Strawberries, blueberries, and grapes mold very quickly once washed. If you wash them, let them air-dry completely. Then, line the bottom of an airtight container with a dry paper towel and place the berries on top. The paper towel absorbs any excess moisture, preventing mold and rot.

  • 4. Keep the Citrus Away

Do not store cut fruits in the same container as cut lemons or oranges. Citrus fruits emit gases and acids that will quickly break down the cell walls of softer fruits like bananas or melons, turning them into a mushy soup.
