There is nothing more annoying than trying to sneak out of a sleeping baby’s room or walking to the kitchen for a midnight snack, only to have the bedroom door let out a loud, high-pitched screech. Squeaky hinges are caused by metal-on-metal friction when the factory lubrication dries up.
You don’t need to drive to the hardware store to buy WD-40. You can fix it instantly using things you already have in your kitchen:
1. The Olive Oil / Coconut Oil Hack
Edible cooking oils work perfectly as temporary lubricants for door hinges.
- How to apply: Do not pour it directly from the bottle, or you will create a mess on the floor. Dip a cotton swab (Q-tip) or a folded paper towel into a small amount of olive oil, coconut oil, or even canola oil.
- The Method: Rub the oiled swab generously all over the squeaky hinge, making sure it seeps into the cracks between the metal plates.
2. Work It In
Once the oil is applied, slowly open and close the door back and forth about 10 to 15 times. You will hear the squeak slowly start to fade and then disappear completely as the oil coats the internal hinge pin.
3. Wipe the Excess
Cooking oils can attract dust if left dripping. Take a clean paper towel and wipe away any excess oil from the outside of the hinge and the wooden door frame.
Alternative: Bar Soap or Petroleum Jelly
If you don’t want to use liquid oil, grab a bar of dry bath soap or some Vaseline. Rub it directly onto the hinges. The wax and fats in the soap will instantly silence the friction!
