5 Hidden WhatsApp Features You Probably Don’t Know

We all use WhatsApp dozens of times a day. It’s basically muscle memory at this point. But even if you think you know the app inside out, there are a few features tucked away in the settings that completely change how you use it. No third-party apps, no complicated hacks—just smart features built right in.

Here are 5 hidden WhatsApp tricks you should start using today:

  • 1. Message Yourself (Your New Digital Notepad)**

Ever needed to quickly save a link, a grocery list, or a photo, and ended up sending it to a confused family member? You don’t have to do that anymore. You can actually open a chat with your own phone number. It’s the perfect place to drop quick notes, voice memos, or files you want to access later on WhatsApp Web. Just tap the new chat icon and select your own contact card at the very top.

  • 2. Lock Specific Chats for Total Privacy**

Handing your phone to someone to show them a photo can be stressful if you have private conversations sitting right there on the screen. WhatsApp now lets you lock specific, individual chats. Swiping right or going into the contact info gives you the “Chat Lock” option. It moves that specific conversation into a hidden folder that can only be opened with your fingerprint or Face ID.

  • 3. Silence Unknown Callers**

Spam calls on WhatsApp have become a massive headache. Instead of getting startled by random international numbers ringing in the middle of your workday, you can mute them automatically. Go to Settings > Privacy > Calls and toggle on “Silence Unknown Callers.” The calls won’t ring out loud, but they will still show up in your call log just in case it was actually something important.

  • 4. Send Photos in True HD Quality**

For years, the biggest complaint about WhatsApp was how badly it ruined photo quality. Not anymore. When you select a photo to send, look at the top of the screen for the “HD” icon. Tapping this lets you send the image in high resolution, preserving the crisp details. It does use a bit more data, but it’s completely worth it when you’re sharing important memories or professional graphics.

  • 5. Edit Messages Instead of Deleting Them**

We all make typos. Instead of sending an asterisk with the corrected word, or deleting the message entirely (which leaves that annoying “This message was deleted” notification), just edit it! Long-press the message you just sent, tap the three dots in the top right corner, and select “Edit.” You have a 15-minute window to fix your mistakes.

Take a minute to try these out—they genuinely make the app much better to use!
