Fluency in reading doesn’t happen by accident. It is a muscle that needs to be trained every single day. If your child struggles with school books or skips lines while reading, it is likely because they haven’t developed their visual tracking skills. Just 10 minutes a day of “Shared Reading” will change your child’s brain and academic performance forever.
1. The “Finger Pacer” Technique When you read to your child, keep your finger under the words as you read. This trains their eyes to follow the text from left to right without skipping.
2. “Echo Reading” You read one sentence with expression and clear pronunciation, and have the child “echo” (repeat) it back to you exactly the same way.
3. The 10-Minute Timer Don’t turn reading into a chore. Set a kitchen timer for 10 minutes and say, “We are just going to read for this long.” When the timer goes off, stop immediately—even if they want to keep going.
4. Discuss, Don’t Quiz After the 10 minutes, never ask, “What did you learn?” Instead, ask, “What was your favorite part?” or “Why do you think the character did that?”
