Imagine you are driving through a remote mountain pass, trying to reach a hidden resort. Suddenly, the signal bars on your phone drop to zero. You are completely lost, and Google Maps is stuck on “Rerouting…”
Relying entirely on a live internet connection for navigation is a massive risk, especially on road trips. Fortunately, Google Maps has a built-in feature that lets you download entire cities and regions so you can navigate seamlessly with zero internet.
Here is how to set up Offline Maps before your next trip:
1. Select Your Destination Area
While you are still at home (connected to Wi-Fi), open the Google Maps app on your phone. Search for the city, town, or district you are traveling to (for example, “Ooty” or “Krishnagiri”).
2. Find the Download Option
Once the map pinpoints your destination, swipe up on the bottom menu card (where the name of the place is written). Tap the three vertical dots (Menu) in the top right corner and select “Download offline map.”
3. Adjust the Map Size
A rectangle will appear on your screen. You can pinch and zoom to adjust the exact area you want to download. Click Download. How It Works When You Are Offline: When you lose internet, you don’t need to do anything special. Google Maps will automatically switch to the offline map you downloaded. Your phone’s GPS chip does not require an internet connection to track your location!
