Standing in an inch of dirty water while taking a shower because the drain is clogged with hair and soap scum is incredibly gross. Most people immediately reach for harsh chemical drain cleaners. But those are toxic, terrible for the environment, and can corrode your PVC pipes over time.
1. The Boiling Water Flush (For Soap Scum)
If the clog is primarily caused by solidified soap scum and conditioner, boiling water is your best friend. Pour it down the drain slowly in two or three stages.
2. The Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano
Pour half a cup of dry baking soda directly down the drain. Follow it immediately with half a cup of white vinegar. It will instantly start fizzing and expanding. Cover the drain with a wet cloth so the fizzing action is forced down into the clog. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush it out with boiling water.
3. The Wire Hanger Hook (For Hair Clogs)
Take a standard wire coat hanger and untwist it until it is straight. Bend the very tip to create a small hook. Slide it carefully down the drain, twist it around to catch the hair clump, and pull it out.
