How to Recover Accidentally Deleted Photos from Your Smartphone

It is a stomach-dropping feeling.

It is a stomach-dropping feeling. You were trying to free up some space on your phone, and you accidentally hit “Delete All” on an entire album of irreplaceable vacation memories or family photos.

Don’t panic. When you delete a file on a smartphone, it isn’t actually wiped from the memory instantly. The operating system just hides it and marks that space as “available to be overwritten.” If you act quickly, getting those photos back is incredibly easy.

1. Check the "Recently Deleted" Folder (The 30-Day Window)

Both iOS and Android have a built-in safety net. On iPhone: Open the Photos app, tap “Albums,” scroll to the very bottom, and tap “Recently Deleted.” On Android (Google Photos): Open the app, tap “Library” at the bottom right, and tap “Trash” or “Bin.” Photos stay here for 30 to 60 days before being permanently wiped.

2. Check WhatsApp Media Folders

Did you originally send or receive that photo on WhatsApp? Even if you deleted it from your main gallery, WhatsApp often keeps a separate, compressed copy in its hidden internal folder.

3. Use a Deep Scan Recovery App (DiskDigger)

If the photo has been permanently deleted from the Trash, stop taking new photos immediately. Download an app like DiskDigger from the Play Store. Run a “Basic Scan.”
