How to Ask Your Professor for a Strong Letter of Recommendation

Whether you are applying for a Master’s degree abroad, a competitive internship, or a scholarship, you will need a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) from a professor.

Whether you are applying for a Master’s degree abroad, a competitive internship, or a scholarship, you will need a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) from a professor. Many students make the mistake of sending a generic, one-line email. If you want a glowing recommendation that actually helps your career, follow this proven formula:

1. Ask Early (Respect Their Time)

Professors are incredibly busy. Asking them to write a letter three days before your deadline is highly disrespectful. Ask them at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance.

2. Ask If They Can Write a "Strong" Letter

Don’t just ask if they can write a letter; ask if they feel comfortable writing a strong one. If they hesitate, thank them and ask someone else. You do not want a lukewarm letter.

3. Provide a "Brag Sheet" (Make It Easy for Them)

Professors teach hundreds of students. Attach a “Brag Sheet” to your email. Include an updated resume, the exact classes you took with them and your grades, and a reminder of a specific project you worked on.

4. Follow Up Politely

If they agree, send a gentle reminder email exactly one week before the deadline. Always email them again later to let them know if you got accepted!
