Oatmeal Done Right — Creamy and Satisfying

“Bad oatmeal is gluey and sad. Good oatmeal is creamy, slightly textured, and holds its toppings without turning into soup. I’ve eaten oatmeal nearly every day for years, so I’ve had a lot of time to refine this.”

What You’ll Need

  • ½ cup rolled oats (not quick oats)
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp honey
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • TOPPINGS: sliced banana, a handful of berries, a spoon of almond butter, a drizzle of honey

Let’s Cook — Step by Step

  1. Step 1 — Combine oats, water, and salt in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the water is mostly absorbed — about 4 minutes.
  2. Step 2 — Reduce heat to low. Pour in the milk and stir constantly for another 2–3 minutes until creamy and thick. Don’t walk away — it catches quickly.
  3. Step 3 — Remove from heat. Stir in honey and cinnamon.
  4. Step 4 — Pour into a bowl. Add your toppings: start with banana slices on one side, berries on the other. A spoon of almond butter in the middle, and a final drizzle of honey.
  5. Step 5 — Eat straight away. Oatmeal waits for no one.

Kitchen Tip: A pinch of salt in the cooking water is what separates good oatmeal from bland oatmeal. Don’t skip it.
